When successfully integrating into a new role, whether a promotion, lateral or a new position outside your company, it can be important to be thoughtful and careful about the transition. A majority of new leaders fail in the first three months of their new role. This can be avoided by taking special steps to understand what your business imperative is and who the key stakeholders are who will contribute to your success. An executive advisor can be extremely helpful in giving objective advice and counsel during these difficult first three months and thereafter. Transitions have different shapes and forms. The other major transition a senior executive can experience is one of being involuntarily let go. Most senior executives have never really looked for a job. An experienced counselor can assist in the preparation, launch and execution of a career transition strategy.
One of the most important relationships a CEO can establish is with his or her board chairperson and Members of the Board. Understanding what their needs are for communication and what their expectations are for performance is critical. Spending enough time nurturing these relationships while running an organization is difficult but nessaccary for success. Likewise, it is important to understand how visible your key staff members need to be with the Board and how important their presentations and presence are. The trusted executive advisor can gather the information that is necessary for a CEO and his team to understand exactly what these expectations and challenges are and provide recommendations for achieving them.
